Biodiversity Net Gain
Under the Environment Act 2021, most developments in England are required to deliver a >10% measurable increase in biodiversity value compared to the pre development baseline.
Achieving Biodiversity Net Gain
We calculate biodiversity net change using Natural England’s statutory Biodiversity Metric, providing a clear and transparent assessment of pre and post development habitat value. The baseline for the calculation is typically established through the Baseline Ecological Survey, where habitats are classified in accordance with the UK Habitat Classification system and assessed for their condition.
Your post development landscape proposals are then reviewed and converted into UK Habitat Classification, with habitats measured and mapped geospatially in GIS to ensure accurate area and linear calculations. These figures, together with condition assessments and any strategic significance considerations, are entered into the statutory metric to determine the biodiversity units and net change outcome.
We have extensive experience advising on practical, achievable approaches to deliver the required uplift on site. Where this is not feasible, we can also assist in sourcing suitable off site biodiversity unit providers to ensure compliance with legislation and planning requirements.
